Carolyn's Corner

Purses, purses, and more purses. I am out of control. I can't stop making purses. There are so many great patterns out there and every time I see a new one I have to make it. And not just one I have to make one in this fabric and another in that fabric. I need an intervention!!! There are too many good patterns, too many gorgeous fabrics and not enough time in my day. I need an extra six hours a day (but without adding to my age). How perfect would that be to have six whole hours a day dedicated to nothing but quilting. That would be heaven. Now that I have vented, let's get on to the important stuff. I have tons of new Christmas fabrics here and they are beautiful. Now is the time to start your holiday gift making. Maybe you have some left over (ha ha) from last season and want to use it up. Well bring it in and see what we have to go with it. We have some great new lines and patterns that would make stunning gifts or just something wonderful for you. Just read on, there is so much going on and I don't want you to miss anything. We have a lot planned for the next three months and I am working on a deadline for Quilters World so I must get to work.

See you all soon. Carolyn

Lighthouse of Oakland County

The Lighthouse of Oakland County is really in need of help. There are a lot of families in the community in need, so if you have an extra jar of peanut butter, jelly, tuna or whatever just drop it off here at the shoppe and we will make sure it gets to them if you don't have time. We make regular trips to Lighthouse of Oakland County in Clarkston. So if you are feeling grateful in this economy remember that there are others less fortunate. It's all about community helping community and we Americans know how to help. Giving to someone in need makes you feel great!

This Year's Motto: Clean, Organize, and Finish!!!!

We will have that purse on display for you to view and we will also have the pattern available or a kit ready for you to create our pick of the month purse. Purses are in and what better way to get what you like? Make it. This is a great gift item also, for those of you who wish to start your holiday shopping. Now is the time to get busy. This year make a personal gift for each special person on your list. We will have great ideas all through the summer and fall so stop in and see what's up.

Block-of-the-Month

Let it Snow!!!

It's here, the new block-of-the-month. It starts July 1st! "Let it Snow" is a six block series and it's all about snow. Now isn't that refreshing? Cold wet pure snow. Come on in and sign up. It will cost you $1.00 a month if you come in once a month, any day of the month, $2.50 if you don't. I can't think of a better thing to be doing on a hot dry July day. Make a snowman. Our Quilt show for this BOM will be announced at a later date, but it looks like next August 2010. So you will have plenty of time to complete it.

6th Annual Fabric Harvest Shop Hop

September 11 & 12, 2009

Our theme is polka dots and we are doing miniatures this year. We changed a few things this year because of the economy so I hope you approve. Passports will be $10.00 this year, with a published pattern by designer Lori Smith included, an $8.00 value, along with a goodie or two. The kit will be $8.00 at each shop and there are four shops this year. With all the fabric you get in your kits you will be able to make all four miniatures and have leftovers. And of course The Village Quilt Shoppe will have its Options, if you want to make something different. We want you to make, whatever you make, your own. Refreshments and prizes as usual. Come and spend the day hopping around to the shops with a friend. Passports will be on sale July 15th.

Store Sample Sale

And North Oakland County Art Festival August 15 & 16, 2009

the Village Quilt Shoppe will be having its first Sample Sale.

This is our first Sample Sale for the shoppe and we hope you will attend. Canterbury Village is also hosting the North Oakland County Art Festival on those days so it should be quite the event. The village shoppes are having sidewalks sales and that includes us. We will have a lot of sample quilts for sale along with a special Fat Quarter Frenzy. Tell all your quilting buddies and art lovers to come spend a day in the village. It promises to be a great day!

The Great Quilters Escape Retreat

to Oscoda October 15, 16, 17, &18th, 2009

This time we will be able to offer either a 3-day or a 4-day package depending on your needs. The price should be the same as the spring retreat, but I haven't got a confirmation yet. The tentative price should be $230.00 for the 3-day and $290.00 for the 4-day. We ask that you sign up in groups of 2 or four so that you are comfortable with your roommate. Each condo accommodates 4 people and the 2 meals a day are included. (Believe me, that is more that enough. We also have a snack table). For those who have not been there, it is fantastic and the chef is wonderful. We have the entire club house at our disposal. All you have to do is QUILT. Sign up early to ensure your spot. There is a $100.00 non-refundable deposit.

Spookville, U.S.A., October 24th & 25th

Don't forget to enter your Spookville Quilt

We are also looking for any Halloween Quilts you may want to enter in our Special Category Exhibit. We thought it would be really fun to have an exhibit with any Halloween theme quilted item. You still have plenty of time to complete your Spookville USA so keep going. It should be a great time to show off your quilts, right before Halloween. The Village is usually decorated nicely and I believe our annual trick or treat is the same Saturday.

Sewing Glossary

Walking Foot Machine - It has a feed mechanism consisting of two presser feet working together and so arranged that they press down alternating upon the work, appearing to walk across the surface of the fabric. This type of feed is also known as alternating presser feet. Walking foot sewing machines are especially useful in situations where the materials being sewn together are difficult to feed through the sewing mechanism consistently.

WOF - Width Of Fabric - from selvage to selvage

Borders -For border strips, measure the quilt center in both directions through the center to ensure straight sides and square corners. Measuring along the edges is less accurate because the may have stretched during assembly.

Glue Stick - Store your glue sticks used for appliqué in the refrigerator. This keeps them firmer, making them easier to use and longer lasting.

Press and Rest works the Best! Once fabrics pieces have been pressed, let them cool in place. It prevents distortion of bias edges.
